Does God exist? This question is one that has been asked from time immemorial, and wrestled and debated with to no end. The conclusion? Well, Mitch Albom’s book Have A Little Faith – A True Story, is remarkable and filled with related profound truths and insights. A chapter in this treasure of a book titled, “The Greatest Question of All”, addresses this age-old question. The author poses this question to his mentor, a Rabbi, and the Reb (as he is known in the book), challenges him to make a case against God.
The author takes up the challenge and fills his case with a summary of how incredibly far our world has progressed. Being in a stunning scientific and technological age, what was impossible before for Man, has now become as reachable as moondust in our pockets. Thus, why the need to believe in God, now that we have solved the great mysteries of old?
Now the Reb responds. No matter how far science tries to trace life back to, even to the singular stage of atoms, there will always remain something unexplainable. And no matter how far they try to go to the other end of the continuum through genetic research, cloning and so forth, there is a point where life ends. What happens after all this comes to an end?
He closes,
“When you come to an end, that’s where God begins.”
The interesting discussions or events that occur throughout do not just end here. On top of addressing that timeless question, the combination of love and the lives of people with different faiths crossing in the most beautiful of ways makes this book a jewel. Be surprised at the twists and turns, the “coincidences”, and how everything comes together to form this elegant and precious story. A challenge to the intellect, and a comfort to the soul.
So have a little faith…you never know when you might need it one day.
